2 1/2 hours
Waiting in line to vote

An extensive ballot, many many first time voters, three voting machines, and a turnout far beyond expectations. Ohio law, as we were repeatedly reminded, limits voters to five minutes in the voting booth -- barely long enough for many people to read through the ballot, it seemed. The five minute limit was not being enforced, though one of the poll judges kept trying to get another (who was supervising the machines) to do something about it. The second poll worker never went further than to politely suggest that the voter attempt to take less than five minutes (while acting as though she didn't think it likely at all that the voter actually would finish in less than five minutes).

A stray child running rampant about the voting room provided some drama when she attempted to unplug one of the voting machines. She was chased off and captured in time.

Dave Kolbe (lobbyist for the AFL-CIO) walked the hallway, calling the elections board on his cellphone; he was never successful at getting an additional voting machine delivered.

Election day
Voting has begun. Charlie is unenthused.
